EURANDOM Postdoc & PhD Seminar (EPPS)
Guidelines for speakers
- The duration of the talk should preferably be between 40 and 45 minutes,
but not longer than 50 minutes. (Take into account that questions may be
asked during the talk.)
- The talk should be directed at a broad audience. Remember that probably
at least two third of the audience is unfamiliar with even the basic results
of your field.
- Preferably start with the origin of the problem/topic: e.g., for which
applications are your results useful and why is it important what you are
doing?
|
-
It can be good to spend the first 20 minutes of the talk giving an
overview of the topic and its backgrounds, and to present more specialized
results in the last 20 minutes.
-
Give emphasis on intuitive explanations rather than presenting formulas.
The number of formulas should be kept to a minimum.
-
Try to formulate some central message which the audience can remember.
For example: "Bayesian techniques can yield better frequentist confidence
intervals"
