	Andreas Löpker left EURANDOM on December 20, 2010 to work at Helmut-Schmidt-Universität in Germany.
	On December 1, 2010 EURANDOM had a farewell party for Liqiang Liu.
	The twin daughters, Sofia and Anna, of Elena Tzenova and Federico Camia were born on October 25, 2010 in Abu Dhabi (Dubai). Congratulations!
	Yoni Nazarathy left EURANDOM on November 12, 2010 to emigrate to Australia. On December 1, 2010 he will starting to work at Technical University of Swinburne Australia.
	Henrik Jönsson also left EURANDOM. We said goodbye to him on October 11, 2010.

	September 1, 2010, Josine Bruin started as a Consultant at Quintiq in Den Bosch. October 12, 2010, Josine defended her Thesis: Inventory control in multi-item production systems.
	September 16 2010, Markus Heydenreich started as UD in STAR in Leiden (60%) and CWI (40%). Markus was granted a Veni by NWO. Markus Heydenreich uses mathematical models to explain abrupt changes in physical systems. Congratulations!
	NWO offered Ingrid Vliegen a Rubicon Award to spend one year at The Wharton School/The University of Pennsylvania, in the U.S.A. She will visit this university for half a year from January 2011.

	Starting Grant for top researcher stochastics The European Research Council (ERC) has granted dr. Johan van Leeuwaarden a Starting Grant of one million euro. The Van Dantzig Prize is awarded every five years by the Dutch Vereniging voor Statistiek en Operationele Research, to a young researcher who has a big impact on today's developments in this field. 	After 2.5 years working for Rabobank International in the role of Quantitative Risk Analyst, Iryna Snihir continued her career in the world of private-banking at Van Lanschot Bankiers in the headoffice located in Den Bosch, where she has been appointed to the position of Risk Manager. Her responsibilities concern the development, maintenance and validation of best-practice risk management techniques involving both credit risk and operational risk; supporting business needs, senior management strategy and the compliance with prudential regulations (BIS-II).
December 2008	December 6, 2008 Birgit and Markus Heydenreich became the proud parents of a (second) son and his name is Lorenz.
	November 11, 2008 Wim Schoeman and Nicola Armstrong got a (second) son and his name is Liam. November 19, 2008 Bernardo Flores and Ana Ferreira  got their theird son and his name is Luis.
	As of November 1, 2008 Peter Grünwald has been appointed Professor Statistical learning on a new chair hosted by the Mathematical Institute and the Leiden University Institute for Advanced Computer Science (LIACS). Statistical learning is about finding patterns in data without making too much assumptions about `reality'. Until recently pattern recognition was largely a subject for computer scientists. With the new input from statistics, a new field is emerging on the cutting edge of statistics and computer science. Grünwald will develop several new education products, among which a course Statistical Learning as well as possibly a course on forensic statistics/statistics and law.
	This month we said good-bye to Efang Kong and Christian Spitoni. Efang started a new job as Lecturer at the University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom and Christian is working at the Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands
November 2008	November 3, 2008 Gergely Mincsovics defended his thesis entitled 'Studies on Tactical Capacity Planning with Contingent Capacities'. November 6, 2008. He is working at the moment at TomTom in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Markus Heydenreich defended his thesis 'A lace-expansion analysis of random spatial models'
	This month we organised a farewell-party for Tobias Müller. After two weeks in Canada he is going to start as a post-doc for one year at the University of Tel Aviv in Israel. Tobias also obtained a VENI-grant from NWO.
October 2008	Zekkia and Maarten van Wieren got a daughter. Her name is Sunna, born on October 2nd. At birth she weighed 3520 grammes and she measured 51 centimetres. Also Irina and Evgeny Verbitskiy became proud parents of a son and his name is Anton.
	Dmitriy Danilov is now working at the Faculty of Chemical Technology, Department of Inorganic Chemistry & Catalysi, Energy materials & Devices of the TU/e. Anne Fey-den Boer started to work at Delft University. Paul Frenken obtained a permanent position as Risk Validator at the Rabobank in Utrecht, The Netherlands and Alexey Koloydenko obtained a permanent position as Lecturer in Statistics and Probability at the Royal Holloway University of London, England
September 2008	In September 2008 Jian Zhang has been appointed as Professor in Statistics at the University of York, United Kingdom. Nicolas Pétrélis moved from Zürich to Berlin and is now working as a post-doc with Professor Deuschel at the Technische Universität in Berlin, Germany. Rongfeng Sun moved from Berlin to Singapore, he is now working at the Department of Mathematics of the National University of Singapore.
	We said good-bye to Sebastien Blachère
	August 26, 27 and 28 we celebrated our 10th Anniversary and also the fact that we now have 100 Alumni. On Tuesday afternoon we had a pleasant meeting with several Alumni and in the evening a nice dinner at restaurant Fens.
August 2008	New jobs for Elena Tzenova, Maria Vlasiou, Peter van de Ven and Andries Lenstra. In August Elena will start working for British Telecom; Maria has been appointed as Assistant-Professor at the TU/e within the framework of the 'Women-in-Science-programme'; Peter will start as (bio)statistician at TNO (Zeist, The Netherlands) for the 'Quality of Life' programme and Andries is back at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
July 2008	Silke Rolles and Franz Merkl have a beautiful son. He was born on July 26, 2008 and his name is Martin.
	Annual Excursion In 2008 we organized a guided tour in the PSV-stade, we played 'beugelen' (ground billiard), jeu de boules and we had a BBQ at the PVOC (the meeting center of the TU/e staff association). For an overview of the excursions of previous years please have a look here.
June 2008	New jobs for: Ambedkar Dukkipati, Bas Lemmens and Fabio Rigat. Ambedkar started at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore - after spending some time in England -. Bas and Fabio both obtained a permanent position at Warwick University, United Kingdom.
	We said good-bye to Guangming Pan and Stelios Bekiros. Guangming Pan is working as Assistant-Professor at the School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) - Division of Mathematical Sciences (MAS) of the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Stelios Bekiros joined the Max Weber Postdoctoral Programme of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
May 2008	Gregory Maillard obtained a permanent position as "Maître de Conférences" at the Centre de Mathématiques et Informatique (CMI) - Laboratoire d'Analyse, Topologie, Probabilités (UMR 6632) at the Université de Provence in Marseille, France and he is very happy with this new job!
April 2008	New jobs for Akira Sakai and Nadia Lalam. Akira started a new position in Hokkaido University. It is in north Japan, close to Russia, so it could be very cold and snowy in winter. After some time spent in Sweden, Nadia is now back in Paris, working for the AXA insurance company (department of Life Operations). You will find their new addresses in the Alumni-list.
	At the 9th INFORMS Telecommunications Conference Telecommunications Modeling, Policy, and Technology (March 27-29, 2008, Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA) the Doctoral Dissertation Award for Operations Research in Telecommunications 2008 has been awarded to Johan van Leeuwaarden. The award aims to recognize outstanding scholarly achievements of young people in the field.
	Hwee Pink Tan returned to Singapore to work as a Senior Research Fellow at the Networking Protocols Department of the Institute for Infocomm Research in Singapore
March 2008	March 18, 2008 Anne Fey-den Boer defended successfully her thesis Sandpile models: The infinite volume model, Zhang's model and limiting shapes at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam.   Anne Fey has investigated probability calculations in mathematical sandpile models. Although the rules of the model are simple, the wide-ranging behaviour that emerges from these is fascinating. Fey's research concerned various forms of self-organisation in these models. Practical applications are, for example, movements in the Earth's crust, stock market fluctuations and the formation of traffic jams. Read more....
	This month we said good-bye to Anne Fey-den Boer, Wouter Kager, Balakrishna Prabhu and Elisa Mariani. Anne will start teaching at the TU/e, Wouter is working as an Assistant-Professor at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam and Balakrishna Prabhu at the Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS) of the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Toulouse, France. Elisa returned to Italy to restart her previous work.
	February 22, 2008  we welcome the son of Francesca Nardi and Patrick Glasmacher. His name is Pietro Willem Francesco. At birth he was 3830 grammes and 51centimetres.
February 2008	Christian Gromoll  won the prestigious Best publication award. An award of the INFORMS Applied Probability Society. This award is for outstanding contributions to the field of applied probability. The award is accompanied by a plaque and a honorarium. The award is given once every two years. 2007 -- H. 	Evgeny Verbitskiy has been appointed as Professor 'Mathematics of Life Science at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. After having pursued a post-doc in the Machine Learning team of the AMIS-Bio group of Florence d'Alché-Buc (thanks to Genopole support), Nicolas Brunel is now lecturer in statistics at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique pour l'Industrie et l'Entreprise (ENSIIE).
Organizational changes of EURANDOM	January 1, 2008 the organizational position of EURANDOM in the TU/e has been changed. The institute became organizationally embedded into the Dept. of Mathematics and Computer Science. The Dept. of Mathematics and Computer Science and EURANDOM will move into a new building in 2010. We are pleased that EURANDOM is able to continue the research activities and the workshop- and visitor programmes at a scale that is virtually equal to the present one. We aim to maintain, and possibly even strengthen, the ties with the advisors (= senior fellows) and research fellows of other universities. The various details concerning the relation between the foundation, the institute EURANDOM and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will be worked out in the coming year. The board of the foundation EURANDOM as well as the directors of the institute will continue their efforts for additional funding. The institute is among others involved in a proposal for a stochastics cluster with EURANDOM as central node. We will keep you keep you informed about future developments.

December 2007	December 5, 2007 EURANDOM celebrated Sinterklaas, following the Dutch traditions, with a nice lunch in the Green room.
October  2007	October, 2007 Zbigniew Palmowski  passed the habilitation procedure successfully  with the thesis Martingale methods and properties of subexponential distributions in fluctuations of Levy processes and random walks at the University of Wroclaw, Poland.

September 2007	This month we say goodbye to Isaac Corro Ramos and Maarten van Wieren. Isaac is going to work at the Mathematics department of the TU/e and Maarten is going to work at AEGON, an insurance company, as a developer for risk management.

With his thesis he obtained the SCS Distinguished Dissertation Award - awarded annually by the School of Computer Science in recognition of outstanding work by a graduate of the school-wide doctoral programs. The award included a cash prize and distinguished lecture by the recipient Adam is now working at the Californian Institute of Technology - Caltech, Pasadena, USA.
August 2007	This month we said good-bye to Mark Holmes. Mark returned to New-Zealand to continue his work at the University of Auckland, Department of Statistics but he promised to come back in June 2008.
July 2007	During the INFORMS conference on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 we had a lovely dinner with many former EURANDOM post-docs in the Zwarte Doos at the campus of the TU/e.
	Eva Riccomagno is now working as 'Professore associato di Statistica' at the Department of Mathematics, University of Genova, Italy. She is visiting fellow of Warwick University and still collaborates with the Politecnico di Torino. You will find her new address details here.
	By the end of June Irina Kourkova got a daughter and her name is Elisa.

	May 21, 2007 Peter van de Ven successfully defended his thesis Equivalences in Design of Experiments at the TU/e. Peter is now working at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.
May 2007	May 11, 2007 Maria Vlasiou and Bert Zwart got married in the USA. They will celebrate their marriage (again) in The Netherlands, July 8, 2007.
April 2007	Andreï Sleptchenko started a new job at the OR consultancy company ORTEC B.V. in Gouda, The Netherlands.
	March 14, 2007 Sophie Ladoucette successfully defended her 2nd thesis at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. The full text of her thesis Analysis of heavy-tailed risks can be found here. Sophie is now working as a Technical Advisor R&D for a reinsurance company (Secura Re) in Brussels.
	March 2007: the trustees of the Rollo Davidson Trust have awarded the 2007 Rollo Davidson Prize to Remco van der Hofstad for "his work in probability and statistical mechanics". The Rollo Davidson Trust was founded in 1975 in memory of Rollo Davidson, an accomplished mathematician of remarkable potential, and Fellow-elect of Churchill College, Cambridge, who died on the Piz  Bernina in 1970. The Trustees award an annual Prize for young probabilists. The list of previous winners can be found here.
March 2007	This month we say good-bye to Denis Denisov and Peter van de Ven. They are both leaving for the United Kingdom. Denis is going to work at the University of Edinburgh and Peter is going to work at the University of Southampton.
February 2007	Nadia Lalam is now working as postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Mathematical Sciences of Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. In collaboration with Peter Jagers and within the working group in stochastic models, she investigates statistical inference for population dynamics models.
	January 30, 2007 at 17h00 Sophie Ladoucette will defend her 2nd thesis. Subject of her thesis is Reinsurance and Large Claims. Promotors: Professor J. Beirlant and Professor Wim Schoutens. POSTPONED to March 14!
	January 22, 2007 Fabio and Monica Rigat got a daughter. Her name is Sara. At birth she was 3.030kg by 51cm.
	This year we appointed 6 Research Fellows: Cristian Giardinà, Peter Grünwald, Bernd Heidergott, Johan van Leeuwaarden, Nelli Litvak and Francesca Nardi.
	Two (former) post-docs obtained a patent in 2006: Dmitry Danilov and Johan van Leeuwaarden and three former post-docs published a book in 2006: Ana Ferreira: Extreme Value Theory: An Introduction Peter Grünwald: Advances in Minimum Description Length: Theory and Applications and Bernd Heidergott: Max-Plus Linear Stochastic Systems

March 2004

• Fabio Toninelli left EURANDOM for a post-doc position  - supported by the Swiss Science Foundation - at the Institute of Mathematics, University of Zurich in Switserland. He is going to work with Prof.dr. Erwin Bolthausen, one of the members of the Steering Committee of EURANDOM.
• On March 1, 2004, Maya and Roman Marintcheva-Petrova got a son, his name is Darin.

April 2004

• Nicola Armstrong started to work as a post-doc at the Faculty of Sciences, Dept. of Mathematics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Nicola is working in the Stochastics section, research group Statistics for Life Sciences.

May 2004

• On May 15, 2004 Johan and Nadia Segers got a son, his name is Ruben. Ruben weighs 3,260 kg and is 50 cm tall.

June 2004

• This year's Annual Excursion was a bicycle trip to Waalre with a guided tour in the Museum of Waalre and the chocolate factory Rudolf Vermeulen. After the excursion we had dinner in Herberg Kiekerjan in Eindhoven.

July 2004

• Madalin Guta and Johan Segers obtained a Veni-scholarship from NWO. Johan will use the Veni-scholarship to develop statistical models focussing on extreme events. Madalin will use the Veni-scholarship to analyze quantum measurements using methods from quantum information, theoretical statistics and probability.
• On July 15th, Francesca Nardi and Patrick Glasmacher got married in Italy.

August 2004

• Peter van der Wal finished his contract and will start working at the research department of the ABN-AMRO bank in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
• Christian Gromoll will return this month to the United States of America to continue his research on the NSF grant at Stanford University.
• Nidhi Hegde is leaving for Paris where she will work for France Telecom.
• Two weddings this month: Roxana Ion & Julian got married in Romania and, Nelli Litvak & Pranab Mandal got married in Russia.
• On August 11, 2004 Peter and Louise Grünwald got a daughter, her name is Wiske.

September 2004

• Peter Grünwald obtained a Vidi-scholarship from NWO. Peter will use the Vidi-scholarship to work on the project 'Learning when all models are wrong'.
• Bas Lemmens has been appointed at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom as Zeeman lecturer

October 2004

• Franz Merkl has been appointed as Professor at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Munich, Germany.
• Jyri Lember (number 1534) participated in the Eindhoven Marathon on October 10, 2004. Out of more than 800 participants for the full marathon he ended at the 258 place with running time 3:25:01.

November 2004

• Wim Schoutens has been appointed as Research Professor (BOF) at the Section of Statistics of the Department of Mathematics of the KU Leuven, Belgium
• Irina Kourkova obtained her Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches at the Université Paris 6 Pierre et Marie Curie, France
• At the end of this month we organised a farewell party for Luis Artiles Martinez, Karel Netocný and Andreï Sleptchenko. Luis is going to work as freelance consultant. Karel accepted a job as scientific researcher at the Institute of Plasma Physics. This is one of the institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Andreï Sleptchenko is leaving in January 2005 for the USA where he is going to work at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

December 2004

• This month we said good-bye to Krishanu Maulik who is going to work as Assistent-Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, India
• The Annual Christmas Dinner took place in Eetcafé De Verlenging in the PSV-stadium
• We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
