Invitation for the EURANDOM Alumni Day(s), January 9 and 10, 2004

Dear Post-docs and Ph.D.-students,

It has been five years since the first EURANDOM post-docs arrived in Eindhoven. Since then the EURANDOM family has been steadily growing: it currently has more than 65 members. Thanks to the quality of research and the stimulating atmosphere at EURANDOM and thanks to the alumni holding distinguished positions in different parts of the world, the institute has acquired a solid international reputation.

Though many of us keep personal contacts with each other, we feel the time has come to form an alumni network for EURANDOM. The benefits of such a network are manifold: it is easier to stay in touch, to exchange information, to share our achievements, and to hear about the latest developments at EURANDOM. In addition, current post-docs can get a glimpse of life after the EURANDOM farewell party, while future post-docs can get a view of the flourishing future EURANDOM has in store for them. Moreover, EURANDOM continues to be a happy hunting ground for academia and industry to contact high-quality researchers. Well, you may join in now.

Please join us by signing up to become a member. As a first activity we are planning to organise a "EURANDOM Alumni Day", to which you are cordially invited. This will be held on January 9 and 10, 2004. We are planning a mixed programme, with talks by former and current EURANDOM members, a discussion on the current and future strategy of EURANDOM, as well as several social events, with plenty of time to meet old friends: a mix of mathematics and fun. Please reserve the date in your diary.

Members of the network, which we propose to call “EURANDOM Alumni Network” (EURANET), will receive half-year electronic reports to stay up-to-date with major activities at EURANDOM and with interesting developments in our lives and careers. We propose to set up a record containing the addresses, positions, and activities of the members. This type of information is very valuable, both to us and to EURANDOM, and can be passed on easily via the alumni webpage.

Your reactions and suggestions are most welcome (see our e-mail addresses below). You will hear from us again soon!

Regards,
Bas, Nelly, Pranab and Jonelleke

Practical information

Location
Of course you all know how to find your way to EURANDOM but I would like to draw your attention to the walking path from Kennispoort (a brand new building on the south-west-side of the campus) to the renovated building of the Department of Building and Architecture. The path is called 'Limbo-path' because the majority of students of the TU/e are coming from Limburg, one of the provinces of the Netherlands.

Travel
Unfortunately it is not possible anymore to travel by train with your KLM flight ticket, you have to buy a train ticket. You might find somebody with a reduction card (Voordeelurenkaart) in order to use the so called 'samenreiskorting' (a group discount for more than two people travelling together). By the way the NS introduced a new ticket machine with a touch screen. On the following website you can practice your Dutch and the use of this machine:
http://www.ns.nl/binnenland/binnenland.cgi?Binnenland/Kaartjes/Kaartjes+kopen/NS-kaartautomaat+met+aanraakscherm
.

Please be very careful taking the train to Eindhoven with a change at Duivendrecht station: pickpockets are still doing their 'job'.

Hotel
The Congress Office made a preliminary group reservation for 25 single rooms in the following hotel:

Parkhotel

Tel. + 31 (0)40 211 4100
Fax + 31 (0)40 211 4100

Please tick 'yes' on the registration form if you wish to stay in this hotel. Discount price is 60 Euro per night for a single room including breakfast. For other hotels you could check the web pages of the Tourist Information Eindhoven.
